Rowena Pailing
Director of Bereavement Support, Community and Volunteering
Rowena joined Sands in 2022, initially as Head of Bereavement Support Services, before moving to her current role in 2026. She leads teams responsible for a wide range of local and national support for bereaved families and anyone touched by baby loss.
With over twenty years of varied experience, including university lecturing and research, Rowena has driven community-based change through co-production and multi-agency working in areas of the Midlands and North of England facing some of the highest levels of deprivation in the UK.
She has volunteered with charities and community groups since the age of 18, and held a number of trusteeships which continue to inform her work at Sands.
Rowena believes that the best possible care and support should be made accessible to anyone who needs it, and that the voices of bereaved families should always be at the centre.
