FAQs
What is Sands Trek Together?
Sands Trek Together is a one-day hiking event in the Lake District National Park, taking place on Saturday, 13th September 2025. Participants can choose between a 10-mile or 20-mile circular route starting from Keswick, walking in memory of loved and missed babies while raising vital funds for Sands.
Where does the event take place?
The event is based in Crow Park, Keswick. Both routes take participants around Derwent Water, with stunning views of the Lakeland fells and countryside.
How challenging is the Trek Together event?
The trek is designed to be achievable for both experienced walkers and beginners with some training. However, both routes include steep ascents and descents, with the 20-mile route requiring a higher level of endurance.
What is the terrain like?
Expect a mix of footpaths, uneven trails, and some rocky sections. The Lake District is not flat, so training on hills is recommended.
What if I cannot complete the walk?
Your safety is our priority. There will be qualified Mountain Leaders and support teams along the route. If you are unable to continue, we will assist in getting you back to the event village safely.
Can I take part as a team?
Yes, you can register as a team with friends, family, or colleagues. Teams can fundraise together or set individual targets.
Can children take part?
Due to the nature of the challenge, the event is only open to participants aged 16 and over. Those aged 16-17 must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
Do I need to arrange my own transport and accommodation?
Yes, participants are responsible for arranging their own travel and accommodation. We recommend arriving in Keswick the night before the event to ensure you are well-rested. Keswick has various accommodation options, including hotels, B&Bs, and campsites. We encourage participants to book early.
What happens if the weather is bad?
The trek will go ahead in most weather conditions, but in the case of extreme weather, alternative routes may be used, or the event may be postponed for safety reasons. Participants should be prepared for all weather with appropriate clothing.
Who will be leading the walk?
The trek will be led by experienced and qualified Mountain Leaders, who will carry safety equipment and provide first aid if needed.
Are dogs allowed on the walk?
If your dog is well behaved, kept on a lead at all times and is cleared up after; then they are welcome to join us. Livestock are kept in fields and mountains along the routes and the surrounding areas, and there may be hidden holes and cliffs which can be extremely dangerous to a dog focused on chasing other animals (rabbits, birds, sheep, other dogs etc). Please keep your dog on a lead for this reason. Please bring plenty of water for your dog and dog poo bags to clean up after your dog (and take them off the hill with you securely – and not left by the side of a path). Please think about whether your dog and you will enjoy the day together on this route – especially if it’s a hot day! There are some steeper sections so the routes aren’t suitable for dogs that are prone to pulling on the lead.
