A diya is a small oil lamp traditionally crafted from lay and lit using a cotton wick and oil or ghee, also known as clarified butter. The word diya comes from the Sanskrit word Deepa, meaning lamp or light.

Originating in South Asian thousands of years ago, the gentle glow of a diya illuminated homes, pathways and places of worship long before electricity existed. However, over time, the diya came to represent something far deeper than practical light. Across generations, it has become a symbol of hope, guidance, love, remembrance and connection.

The history and symbolism of the diya

For thousands of years, the diya has held a special place in homes and communities across South Asia. What began as a practical source of light gradually became a powerful symbol of hope, guidance and the enduring triumph of light over darkness.

The diya has a deep connection to Diwali, the Festival of Lights, rooted in ancient tradition. According to the Hindu epic Ramayana, it is said that when Lord Ram returned to his palace after 14 years of exile, villagers lit rows of diyas to guide him home. This act of light became a lasting symbol of hope over despair and light over darkness.

Over time, every part of the diya came to hold its own meaning. Together, the clay lamp, the oil or ghee, the cotton wick and the flame represent far more than their practical purpose, each carrying a rich symbolism that has been passed down through generations.

  • The diya - illustrates the physical vessel that carries the light
  • The oil or ghee - sustains the flame - symbolising love, devotion and selfless giving
  • The wick - embodies the human soul - without the wick, there can be no light
  • The flame - guides us through the dark - it represents hope, wisdom, and the triumph of light that overcomes darkness

Together, these elements make the diya far more than a traditional oil lamp. They represent hope, reflection, remembrance, and the enduring bonds that continue beyond loss.

Light and remembrance across cultures and faiths

Whilst rooted in South Asian heritage, the symbolism of light is universal. Across many cultures and faiths, candles, lamps and flames have long been used to honour loved ones, mark significant moments and create space for reflection.

For some families, a diya may hold deep cultural or spiritual significance. For others, it simply represents love, hope and the enduring bonds that remain. It is this universal language of light that makes the diya a meaningful remembrance item for bereaved families of all cultures, faiths and backgrounds.

A meaningful way to remember a much-loved baby

For many bereaved parents, the symbolism of the diya can feel especially meaningful. Pregnancy and baby loss is often described as a journey through darkness, a path no parent expects to walk. Whilst a diya cannot take away grief, its gentle flame can serve as a reminder that even in our darkest moments, love, hope and connection continue to exist alongside loss.

It offers something tangible: a physical expression of love, memory and the enduring bond between parent and child. Just as the wick carries the flame, our memories continue to carry the love we hold for our babies, keeping them close in our hearts and lives.

The inspiration behind The Enduring Light

The legacy of the diya, and the comfort, hope and connection it continues to bring to generations of families, inspired The Enduring Light. Drawing on the timeless tradition of the diya, it offers a meaningful way to honour and remember a much-loved baby.

Handcrafted by bereaved mum and ceramic artist Shaheda, who turned to Sands for support following the death of her baby, each diya reflects both exceptional craftmanship and lived experience. Today, Shaheda works alongside Sands to help other bereaved families by handcrafting these heartfelt diyas.
