While the overall mortality rate has gradually decreased across the UK, the picture for each nation is more complex. As Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have comparatively small populations, their mortality rates fluctuate far more from year to year.

The numbers for 2021 (the most recent year for which data is available) also show the current picture for each nation and the whole of the UK.
