In the UK in 2014, 1,562 babies died within the first week of their lives, and another 433 died within the next 3 weeks.1
The number of babies who die in the neonatal period (the first 28 days) has fallen markedly over the last decade, largely because of advances in medical knowledge and clinical care.
But in 2014, it remained the case that one in 384 babies died in the first four weeks of life in the UK.1
