The National Bereavement Care Pathway (NBCP) Cymru consists of care pathways, training and resources to improve bereavement care following pregnancy and baby loss.
NBCP Cymru covers five types of losses:
- Miscarriage, ectopic and molar pregnancy
- Termination of pregnancy for fetal anomaly
- Stillbirth
- Neonatal death
- Sudden unexpected death of an infant
It sets out nationally recognised practical guidance for team practice and family experience so care is equitable and expectations are clear.

How is the NBCP being implemented in Wales?
NBCP Cymru has been developed with national partners, professional development groups, third sector, Health Improvement Wales and bereaved parents. It is commissioned by the Welsh Government and supported by the National Networks for Maternity and Neonatal and Child Health.
Through extensive consultation and co-development, the production of five national bereavement care pathways, supporting guidance documentation and 13 resource packages set out nationally recognised practical guidance. This aims to ensure that care is equitable and expectations are clear for team practice and family experience.
During the next phase of implementation, there will be a series of pathway troubleshooting events alongside Communities of Practice which will support practical application of the pathways.
