Why should your school support Sands?

When a baby dies, it might feel safer to avoid the conversation with children. But many parents find that being open with their other children about what has happened can help them both manage their grief.

Children in schools across the country have already or will in the future grieve the loss of a sibling. This is why we shouldn’t be afraid to talk about baby loss with them. Sands is encouraging schools to help us #BreakTheSilence around baby loss and talk to students, staff and parents about our work.

As part of this conversation, schools might also decide to fundraise for Sands. Fundraising is a fantastic way to involve children in their local community and make a valuable contribution to others. It also provides opportunities for children to develop their awareness of social responsibility and skills in planning and research, teamwork and organisation and evaluation.

Looking for inspiration?

There’s an endless possibilities when it comes to how your class or school wants to support Sands. You might already have an event planned and be looking for a beneficiary, or you might want to plan something new. In the past, groups have organised:

     Summer/Winter fairs

     Quiz/Games Nights for parents

     Bake sales

     Bring and buy sales

     Dress down (or up!) days

Grow a £1/Smarties challenge – an entrepreneurial challenge

Sponsored walks, runs, swims or jumps

Whilst some of these events might seem impossible with the current COVID-19 guidance and restrictions, our Fundraising team are on hand with lots of suggestions on how to make them virtual, socially-distanced and safe – drop us an email to fundraising@sands.org.uk
