Neonatal loss: “We chose to allow our son peace” - Lydia and Theodore’s Story
Two days after he was born, Lydia’s son Theodore experienced severe difficulties with his lungs. He suffered a pneumothorax while being cared for in a neonatal Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU). When Lydia’s husband arrived at the hospital, they were faced with the most devastating decision any parents could ever imagine. Together, they chose to withdraw treatment and allow their son peace. Theodore spent his final moments in the arms of his mummy and daddy, surrounded by love.
Lydia also shares how attending Sands meetings meant she met other parents who truly understood her grief, and that support from Sands continued to be a source of comfort and strength to her, helping her navigate some of the darkest moments of her life and reminding her that she was not alone. Wanting to give back to Sands, she has become a Befriender, supporting other families facing the same heartbreak she’s experienced. Being able to help bereaved parents find understanding, support, and hope has become an important part of Theodore’s legacy.
