In 2025, the Welsh government commissioned a rapid assurance assessment of Maternity and Neonatal Services in Wales.

The final report, "The Path to Safer Beginnings in Wales A national assurance assessment of Maternity and Neonatal care and services" was published on 25 February 2026.

In accepting the report recommendations, the government has announced a three-year programme to improve Maternity and Neonatal services in Wales. This must include listening to the voices of bereaved families.
