Two years ago, we lost our little girl, Eveleigh.

I wasn’t sure where to turn, grief left me feeling isolated and lost. I had heard of Sands, but I didn’t know they had a football team. When I found out, I instantly knew I wanted to create something similar for other dads like me. At the time, there was very little local support for bereaved fathers, and I truly believed this could make a difference.

Rightly, there is a lot of support out there for mums, but dads often don’t have that same safe space. We’re expected to be strong, to hold everything together but that can leave us feeling like we’re not allowed to be vulnerable or share how we really feel.

That’s why I started Sands United Dudley. We now have over 20 dads involved in the team. I organise football sessions, arrange charity matches, and, most importantly, make sure every player knows they have a space where they can talk, be heard, and receive the support they need. It’s not just about football, it’s about connection, healing, and honouring our babies.

Running that first session remains one of the proudest moments of my life. I was proud to wear Eveleigh’s name on my shirt, and to create a space where other dads could do the same. I often hear from the dads how much the team has helped them, how it’s given them strength and comfort. The fact that they keep coming back, week after week, shows how needed this space truly is.

For all of us, it’s a release, a time to step away from the weight of grief and just enjoy the game with others who truly understand. There’s real power in simply being together, sharing stories, or even just having a laugh on the pitch.

Every Tuesday is my day for Eveleigh. It’s my way of honouring her memory and supporting others who are walking a similar path. Without starting this group, I’m not sure the support would have existed here and that’s something I’m incredibly proud of.

Two years on, we’re still going strong, and we’ll continue to be here for any dad who needs us.
