I write poetry and the words are inspired by many different personal experiences. This particular poem came to me a few years ago as I began to realise the impact pregnancy and baby loss has had on close friends and family and just how fortunate and blessed my wife and I have been.  I hope this might help somebody, even in a small way.

For Parents Everywhere…

Once a light of life is lit, expectations soar
Parent’s hearts are lifted in ways unknown before
Hope and dreams ensue apace, some trepidation too
As new goals and possibilities, come swiftly into view

For many this beginning brings a life of complete joy
As parents welcome to this world their little girl or boy
With love they lead and guide them, and pass on what they know
Then watch them take their place in life as they nurture, learn and grow

But there are those who walk a different path though beginnings are the same
And their hopes and dreams are stolen though no one can explain
Why their little light shone brightly but could only stay a while
And perhaps, for the briefest of brief moments, they held their little child

But every light illuminates the deepest, darkest void
And the one that burns the shortest time brings no less love or joy
For each light shines intensely, regardless of how long
And every single beacon, glows equally as strong.
