Each year during June, as part of Sands Awareness Month, we hold the Sands Garden Day and Memorial Event at the Sands Garden at the National Memorial Arboretum, Staffordshire. The event is open to anyone who affected by the death of a baby.

Last Saturday was the 16th annual Sands Garden Day and Remembrance Event, and was one of the most well attended yet.

The day included candle lighting followed by a collection of readings, poems and songs from Sands members, staff and bereaved parents. Families were invited to write a message in memory of their babies on small stones to leave in the Sands Garden, and on special cards to hang on trees in the marquee.

In the second half of the service, parents and families walked to the Sands Memorial Garden to lay their stones and listen to Judith Abela, Acting Chief Executive Officer at Sands, gave a short speech thanking everyone who attended to remember their babies.

Elizabeth Grace, Senior Corporate Partnerships Fundraiser at Sands, attended the Garden Day and Remembrance Event for the first time and wrote an account of her experiences. You can read this here.
